Security Deposits
HiLucy's security deposit system verifies a guest's ability to pay without actually charging them. This protects your property while keeping guests happy.
How It Works
Authorize-Then-Void
When a guest completes checkout for a product with a security deposit:
- Authorization — Stripe places a temporary hold on the guest's card for the deposit amount
- Verification — We confirm the card is valid and has sufficient funds
- Void — The authorization is immediately voided (released), so no money is taken
- Card saved — The guest's payment method is saved on file
The guest sees a temporary pending charge that disappears within 1-7 days (depending on their bank).
Extended Authorizations
For rentals longer than 7 days, HiLucy uses Stripe's extended authorization feature, which allows the hold to remain valid for up to 31 days. This ensures the card can still be charged if damage is discovered after checkout.
Deposit Lifecycle
| Status | Meaning | |--------|---------| | Verified | Card was authorized and voided successfully | | Pending | Authorization is in progress | | Failed | Card was declined or insufficient funds | | Charged | Deposit was captured (e.g., for damage) | | Released | Authorization was voided, no charge |
For Property Managers
In the Rental Manager, each booking shows its deposit status:
- Green badge — Deposit verified, card on file
- Red badge — Verification failed, needs attention
- No badge — No deposit required for this product
Charging for Damage
If damage occurs during a guest's stay:
- Open the booking in Rental Manager
- Click Charge for Damage
- Enter the amount and reason
- The guest's saved card is charged
Cancellation Fees
For guests who cancel within the cancellation policy window, you can charge a cancellation fee using the same card-on-file mechanism.
Guest Experience
Guests see a clear message during checkout explaining that a temporary hold will be placed on their card for deposit verification, and that no money will actually be charged.
